Cycling fever has arrived again at Rocketts Landing! This Saturday, hundreds of cyclists will ride their way through our community for the annual Cap2Cap Bike Ride. Each year's ride gets bigger and better, and we can't wait to welcome everyone to our community.
As a fundraiser for the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, Cap2Cap helps raise money for completing the pedestrian-friendly 55-mile-long trail that will connect Richmond to Jamestown. Most of the trail's remaining developments are on track to be completed by the end of 2014, with a three-mile portion in Varina scheduled for completion by spring of 2015. And the Cap2Cap bike ride is a huge part of bringing the envisioned trail to reality.
“We're currently raising money to put amenities [on] the length of the trail, and to use technology to enhance the trail experience,” explains Beth Weisbrod, executive director of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. “We’re so grateful for the broad community support from sponsors, riders and volunteers!”
This year, 2200 cyclists are signed up to participate, a 10 percent growth over 2012! Participants will either start at Rocketts Landing or James City County’s Chickahominy Riverfront Park and ride the 100-, 50- or 25-mile courses. Each distance winds them across Central Virginia through Civil War battlefields and the rolling countryside.
And not only are more people riding, other new developments are in store, too!
New Entertainment
Upon finishing the Cap2Cap bike ride, a lively afterparty at the Rocketts Landing riverfront is in store for those who started their ride at our community. Musical entertainment is by Cap2Cap favorite Rattlesnake Creek and new addition to the party mix Notch 8. Plus, Flying Squirrels fans will have fun mingling with beloved mascot, Nutsy.
VA Capital Trail Pale Ale
That’s right! This year marks the inaugural beer of the Cap2Cap bike ride: the VA Capital Trail Pale Ale. Brewed by Richmond’s own Hardywood Brewery, sale proceeds will benefit the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. Described by Hardywood as an “American-style pale ale, dry hopped with Willamette and Cascade hops,” only 15,000 cans exist. The beer will be available ride day at the Rocketts afterparty and directly from the brewery — but be forewarned, with such a limited run, once they’re gone, they’re gone until next year!
