When Cedar Works Gallery curator Meredith Timberlake told us she was excited for the upcoming show, we knew something intriguing was in the works.
The one-of-a-kind gallery in Rocketts Landing currently features bold, captivating works by local artists Jim Timberlake and Jeff Satterthwaite, and marks the first time Meredith has curated different mediums side-by-side. The dual showcase opened just a couple of weeks ago, and we couldn't be more delighted with the result! So, we thought we'd dive in a bit and offer some background info on the artists, their work and the drivers behind their creativity.
Jim Timberlake, Painter
This Rocketts Landing resident paints oils on wood panels to create complex, textured layers that are compellingly rich in color. His creative approach is based on a layering technique and process that result in abstract works using geometric lines with an aged, weathered essence. A self-taught artist, Jim started painting only five years ago at the age of 55 — how’s that for inspiration! He picked up his paintbrush for the first time at Artworks, a local collective of studios and galleries in the Manchester District, and hasn’t looked back, having already featured his work in 19 exhibits since 2007.
Fun Fact: Jim is also Meredith’s father and says she and his family constantly serve as an inspiration for his art!
Jeff Satterthwaite, Photographer
An advertising creative (at AliceBlue) by day and photographer by night (okay, not just night!), Jeff Satterthwaite has been capturing images since 1986 — and professionally for the past 13 years. For subject matter, the untold stories of items in life that people forget about or leave behind — such as forgotten boats, people and abandoned buildings — captivate him, and he is constantly intrigued with breathing new life into the otherwise ordinary. Jeff works in both color and black-and-white, and the featured works are actually taken with a film-based camera instead of digital, resulting in rustic, bold and hauntingly beautiful images of life overlooked.
Fun Fact: Jeff once stumbled upon an abandoned house filled with tons of dolls and instead of feeling thrown into some kind of horror movie, he couldn’t stop imagining the child behind the collection and spent hours visually capturing the story.
While the Cedar Works Gallery is only open to Rocketts Landing residents and their guests, if you have a chance to experience another show in the future, these are two artists you won’t want to miss!
