Lettuce, rhubarb and squash -- oh my!
Eating locally doesn't get any closer to home at Rocketts Landing than our residents' very own community garden.
In its fourth growing season, the community garden features 32 individual plots brimming with all sorts of plant life, from flowers to produce. Located near the banks of the James River, directly beside the community pool, residents can reserve their own plot and garden to their heart's content throughout the year -- and they certainly take advantage of the opportunity!
This year, we've spotted cherry tomatoes, squash, grapes, a variety of herbs, and yes -- even rhubarb (which they'll soon harvest, hopefully for some delicious rhubarb pie).
We’ve heard fantastic stories from residents about garden harvesting parties when all the goodies are ready to enjoy. And when last year’s growing season yielded a bumper crop of basil, residents made, saved and enjoyed a bunch of pesto. One Cedar Works resident is even cooking up dishes in her personal chef business Eat At Home using fresh ingredients from her garden and sharing the produce love with her clients.
Two garden plots are currently open and eagerly awaiting green thumbs to dig into them, so if you’re a Rocketts Landing resident looking to get your hands and shovels dirty, step on up! We’ll provide the garden plot and water. All you need are the seeds, tools and sunshine. And if the past week’s summer heat is indicative of the months ahead, you’ll certainly have plenty of sun on your side.
You can reserve the plot (at no cost) through the main office by contacting Blakeley at Virginia Management. Let the gardens grow!
