Running a 5k in boxer briefs? You can this weekend at Richmond'’s first Boxer Brief Battle this weekend at Rocketts Landing!
Organized by the newly formed nonprofit Hitting Cancer Below the Belt (HCB2), the Boxer Brief 5k helps raise awareness about colon cancer prevention -- which is the first 5k event of its kind in the Richmond region. Event proceeds of this year's inaugural race will benefit the American Cancer Society and Access Now.
HCB2 Founder and President Mendelin (Mindy) Conklin formed the organization in 2012 after her husband of 20 years passed away from colon cancer. A unique nonprofit run completely by volunteers, HCB2's goal is to create community events that help educate people about colon cancer while providing resources for survivors, caregivers and loved ones.
On June 8, the Boxer Brief Battle will wind runners through Rocketts Landing and downtown Richmond before ending at our riverfront for an afterparty and award ceremony. Awards will be given for top three male and female finishers in each age group and best team costume. HCB2 will also award and recognize the top three men and women colon cancer survivors.
The band My Darling Fury will begin playing at 8:30 a.m. with awards starting at 10 a.m. Nutzy the Flying Squirrel and the da Vinci surgical robot will also be onsite for a visit. Other afterparty details include food and drinks, massages by Massage Envy and a bead-bracelet-making tent.
So far, 410 people have registered to run and open spots are still available. All participants receive event boxers that they can wear over their clothes during the race — and they’re still welcoming both runners and volunteers. Though online registration for Boxer Battle Brief 5 k is now closed, you can sign up in person at one of the following locations:
We love when people come together for events at our community that support a good cause, and we can’t wait to see this new race take off!
