Nothing says RVA summer better than a weekend full of sweaty spandex and pure athleticism along the James River! This weekend, our riverfront community hosts two exciting annual events: the Rocketts Landing Sprints Regatta and the Rocketts Landing Triathlon. Hosted by the Virginia Boat Club and Richmond Multisports, respectively, each event brings out our region's top athletes for some fierce competition.
Rocketts Landing Sprints Regatta
Each summer, rowing heats up on the James River with the Virginia Boat Club's annual Sprints Regatta. This year, teams from across the Atlantic Region hailing from Virginia (Richmond, Northern VA, Hampton Roads, Charlottesville); Maryland; Washington, D.C.; and North Carolina will make their way to Rocketts Landing to compete. Open to Masters and Masters Novices rowers, all events will be refereed by USRA officials with courses controlled by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Sprints Regatta regulars will see extended vendor concessions and additional racing events compared to last year, offering spectators and rowers even more regatta excitement. And though the weather has been cool this week, Saturday we're back into the 90s, which makes for a great day rowing on the river!
Rocketts Landing Triathlon
Over 200 people are signed up to compete in this year’s Rocketts Landing Triathlon, which means RVA is about to see a bunch of hardcore athletes in action. Organized by Richmond Multisports, participants will compete in a 1.5k swim, 40k ride and 10k run, and they’ll be greeted by a lively afterparty featuring beer, wine and food — with music by a DJ who knows exactly how to get a tired crowd grooving!
This year, all proceeds from the party will benefit Sportable, a local nonprofit that helps visually and physically challenged athletes pursue sports. Richmond Multisports is also still seeking volunteers to help out at the event as a kayaker, run or bike course marshal, and water-stop thirst quencher. Whether you’re a Rocketts Landing resident or RVA sports enthusiast, we’d love to have you get involved and help make this the best triathlon yet.
