Once again, the time is here to come out to Rocketts Landing and marvel at the men and women competing in our Rocketts Landing Triathlon. As an annual sports event produced by Richmond Multisports, the triathlon offers a competitive course that spans downtown Richmond with urban panoramas and pastoral landscapes matched by inviting river views.
This year, the event serves for the first time as the 2011 USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Region Club Championship. An Olympic distance triathlon, the race covers a 1.5k swim in the James River, 40k bike through the country and 10k run through historic downtown Richmond, with $5,250 prize money up for grabs to the winning participant. But prize money isn't the only purse involved. The event will also raise funds to benefit Fulton Hill’s Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC), a community center dedicated to supporting low-income families living in the East End.
The triathlon starts and stops at Rocketts Landing, followed by a festive post party featuring live music by Richmond’s own Moosa, a beer and wine tent, and an array of food prepared by P.F. Chang’s.
While registration is no longer open (over 600 participants already registered!), Richmond Multisports President and Race Director Laurie Householder Mehler says they are still seeking volunteers to help with the event. So, if you’re interested to support the dedicated athletes by serving as a body marker, course marshal, aid station volunteer, motorcycle marshal, kayaker, lifeguard or another role, visit the Richmond Multisports website. Volunteers receive a free race shirt, complimentary food and beverages — and of course, potential sweaty smiles and high-fives from race participants.
All in all, our Rocketts Landing Triathlon is a lively event showcasing stellar athletes and a challenging course. But we think it’s best wrapped up by Laurie’s sentiments:
“The triathlon is really evolving, and we’re focused on making this an awesome event that we’ll keep building and growing for years to come.”
We couldn’t have said it better.
