The time is here, friends, for the annual International Dragon Boat Festival at Rocketts Landing! Organized by Sports Backers, the event brings Richmonders down to the banks of the James River to celebrate the river, Chinese culture and some friendly paddling competition.
On Saturday, August 10, 30 dragon boat teams -- 10 more than last year's race! -- from across the region will descend upon Rocketts Landing. Dragon boats hold up to 20 people in what resembles an oversized canoe adorned with an ornate dragon head. As one boater rhythmically beats an onboard drum, the other participants paddle in sync to race on the James River. While plenty of Richmond teams are represented (such as SnagAJob and MWV), paddling teams from as far away as North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida, are making their way to RVA to claim their chance as the top dragon boat team.
Each team can compete in up to three heats -- and the winning teams will then compete in the divisional Dragon Boat championships. While paddlers are busy competing, spectators will get to enjoy a lively cultural celebration on land. Authentic Chinese entertainment begins at 3:00 p.m., and includes: Taiko Drumming by River City Taiko, Traditional Dance by the Richmond Folk Dance Group, Tibetan Dance by the Pacific Arts Troupe and a Kung Fu Fan Dance by the Richmond Chinese School, among many other performances.
“We’re excited about making this event a celebration of Richmond’s riverfront,” explains Meghan Keogh, race director for Sports Backers. “We want people to use the Dragon Boat Festival as a way to spend the entire day out on the river.”
Food vendors, beer trucks and live music will continue to round out event festivities for a stellar International Dragon Boat Festival. So whether you’re competing, spectating or festival hopping, we can’t wait to see you down at Rocketts Landing this Saturday.
