Cedar Works Gallery at Rocketts Landing Features Up-And-Coming Artists

Fresh talent and creativity is certainly in the air right now at Rocketts Landing -- and we're loving the vibe around here. Not only is Art 180's traveling installation "What Do You Stand For?" visiting our community, our residents' Cedar Works art gallery just opened a new show, "Urbanesque," featuring some of Richmond's emerging artists.

"Urbanesque" showcases four Richmond-based artists relatively new to the art scene, ranging in age from 27 to 32 years old: Renee Kaebler, Josh Woods, Kristin Polich and Bekah Miller. Curated by Meredith Timberlake, whose parents live in Cedar Works, "Urbanesque" provides these new artists with an opportunity to showcase their emerging talent. In fact, this is Josh and Bekah's very first show. (And Josh has already sold three of his four pieces on display!)

“We chose the name ‘Urbanesque’ because these are young artists just beginning, who are still a little rough around the edges but aren’t afraid to create their art in the fashion they choose,” says Meredith. “[They also] are not willing to compromise who they are and what they represent through their art.”

With mediums that include canvas and oil, paper and ink, and fabric and thread, “Urbanesque” aptly displays each individual’s scope of expression, as well as the range of talent Richmond fosters. While both Renee and Kristin hold a degree in art (VCU and Hollins University, respectively), Josh and Bekah are self-taught, and each artist shares an innate passion for artistic expression.

“I hope this show makes people realize you don’t necessarily have to be trained technically to be an artist,” Meredith explains. “All it takes is a little talent, creativity and — most of all — vision. Being a creative thinker comes from within.”
